Welcome back to the Buena Park Heart Center blog. Today, we explore one of the revolutionary treatments we offer – Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP) therapy. I often refer to it as a game-changer for many patients. But what exactly is it, and how can it help?

What is EECP Therapy?

Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP) is a non-invasive treatment designed to improve blood flow to the heart. This therapy utilizes pressure cuffs, similar to blood pressure cuffs, situated on the patient’s legs.

How Does EECP Work?

EECP therapy aids in enhancing the blood flow to the areas of the heart where circulation might be compromised. The process works in tandem with the heart's natural rhythm:

  • When the Heart Rests: During the resting phase of the heart (known as diastole), the cuffs inflate from the bottom to the top, which pushes the blood upwards and enhances the blood flow.

  • When the Heart Contracts: As the heart contracts (systole), the cuffs rapidly deflate, reducing the heart's workload.

This cyclic inflation and deflation, synchronized with the heart's cycle, promotes the development of new tiny blood vessels, potentially offering a natural bypass around narrowed or blocked arteries.

Who Can Benefit?

EECP therapy is beneficial for patients with:

  • Angina (chest pain)

  • Heart failure

  • Chronic chest pain

Additionally, it's often recommended for patients who either do not qualify for or prefer to avoid surgical treatments like stents or bypass surgery.

Benefits of EECP Therapy

  • Non-Invasive: No incisions or general anesthesia is required.

  • Reduced Symptoms: Many patients experience fewer symptoms of angina and can often reduce their reliance on medication.

  • Increased Energy: Improved circulation often leads to increased energy levels and exercise capacity.

  • Short and Convenient Sessions: Typically, a session lasts around one hour, with patients undergoing treatments for a few weeks.
